5 Healthy Staples That Are Cheaper Day One at (Amazon-Ified) Whole Foods

Having a love-hate relationship with Whole Foods isn't uncommon. We love getting our hands on fresh, organic produce, but we hate how one trip seems to gobble up an entire paycheck. Luckily for us—and our bank accounts—things are changing in the healthy food mecca's (artfully arranged) aisles.

As of today, Amazon officially owns the grocery chain, and its first order of business? Lowering prices on a handful of best-selling staples for Amazon Prime members. In true Amazon fashion, you won't have to wait months to see a difference in prices: It's already happening at stores across the country.

According to CNBC, the discounts are hitting many different items, from fruit and veggies to kitchen cabinet must-haves.

Here are the healthy faves that are deeply discounted as the new Amazon-Whole Foods era begins.

1. Avocados

Last Friday, organic avocados in New York City cost $2.99 each, and now they've dropped down to $1.99, CNBC reports, making it easier than ever to get your daily intake of healthy fats that are said to lower your cholesterol and boost your metabolism.

2. Bananas

Bananas will forever make the perfect naturally packable snack, and now you don't need to dip into your SoulCycle fund to buy enough for the week. A pound of regular bananas in NYC was 79 cents, and now it's only 49 cents. And organic is just as good: It used to be 99 cents, and now it's down to 69 cents.

Since bananas are basically nature's candy—except, you know, jam-packed with potassium, fiber, and vitamins—getting an entire pound for well under a dollar is a total steal.

3. Organic kale

Your morning smoothies are about to get a lot less expensive. Before, kale typically rang in at $3.99 a container in NYC. Now, each is at $3.49, making it a little easier to fill your cart with greens without spending all your green.

In fact, with the price change, now you have every excuse you need to start eating kale on the reg: Get a boost of calcium, vitamin C, and omega-3s by whipping up a vitamin-packed salad, some healthy soup, or a batch of kale scones for dessert.

Yes, the nut butter gods have spoken: You can now get your almond butter fix for a dollar cheaper. While a jar of Whole Foods' 365 almond butter used to sell for $7.99 a jar in NYC, it's currently at $6.99 (AKA the perfect reason to stock up).

Because the creamy spread is full of protein, vitamin E, and magnesium, you'll get to snack on a nut butter that not only helps you feel full and satisfied, but also supports bone health and your central nervous system. All for a deal that's impossible to refuse.

All of these price differences are impressive, but the change in Fuji apples might just take the cake. The crispy fruit was $3.49 a pound for the organic variety in NYC last week, and now the price has dropped 43 percent to just $1.99 a pound. Nope, you're not dreaming.

Like bananas, apples make for the perfect grab-and-go snack when you're running out the door. And while you're munching away, you'll be helping out your complexion, getting a hefty supply of fiber, and taking in some flavonoids, which help keep your heart healthy. It is one of the healthiest apples available, after all.
