One of the buzziest hair-care products of early 2021 was Playa Supernatural conditioner. The conditioner was so popular when it first came out, the brand could hardly keep it on shelves, and it eventually amassed a 2,000-person waitlist. When I finally got my hands on a bottle, I couldn’t believe I’d been using other conditioners that weren’t Supernatural. The intensely hydrating formula helped nourish my split ends and parched strands that had been damaged by years of bleach, dye, and heating tools—and even though my hair health has come a long way, I still keep Playa Supernatural on regular rotation.
But dry hair isn’t my only issue: Thanks to the sun and product build-up (particularly: dry shampoo), my scalp was in desperate need of some TLC, and I wanted to find a product that could exfoliate, soothe, and moisturize—and Playa offered that in the form of its California Sea Salt Scrub shampoo.

Playa California Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo — $38.00
I saw results immediately after washing my hair: Any kind of flakiness I was experiencing was buffed away by the sea salt, and the tea tree oil (an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal powerhouse that can be used to fight blemishes and mitigate dryness and irritation) left my scalp feeling cool, tingly, and refreshed. After using the shampoo twice a week for about a month, I noticed that not only was my scalp feeling healthier, but my hair was fuller, softer, and supremely shiny.
If you’ve tried shampoo scrubs before, then you know there’s an adjustment period of sorts. The formula doesn’t lather as most traditional shampoos do, so you, like me, might wonder for a few seconds: “Is this actually doing anything to my hair?” You massage the scrub into your scalp (it should coat the entire surface area) for about thirty seconds before rinsing. I was initially nervous that the scrub didn’t actually *clean* my hair (and I have oily roots), but these fears subsided after I let my strands air-dry and noticed the formula did rinse away build-up without completely stripping my scalp of its natural oils like a clarifying shampoo might do.
I’m not the only one who swears by California Sea Salt Scrub for some instant scalp relief. Hundreds of Sephora customers praise the hair-care solution for its effective ingredients and notice a clear difference. “Literally the best feeling on my scalp ever. My hair is so much healthier from using this once a week after shampooing. Highly recommend!” one person writes. Another left a review that says, “This scrub really helps me with my itchy dry flaky scalp. I also noticed how shiny and clean it makes my hair look, it really does clean all the product off that might be built up in your hair.”
While the cold weather months encourage us to invest in exfoliating products for our face, we don’t want to leave our dry scalps in the dust. Playa California Sea Salt Scrub is one of my favorite ways to give my scalp the love and care it deserves year-round.
