Let's face it: Many of us ask a lot of our hair. Maybe you've cycled through different dye jobs, taken many a swim in a chlorinated pool, and spent a lot of time tearing out your hair with too-tight ponytails (guilty as charged). If you're looking for an easy way to combat the damage and dryness your hair has accumulated over the years, adding nourishing ingredients to your shampoo-conditioning routine can make a major difference. That's why we asked hair stylist Ashley Rubell to name the best shampoos for shiny hair she recommends again and again.

When you're on the market for a shampoo that both adds shine and nourishes your hair, Rubell recommends scanning the ingredients list for a few key players. Namely, argan oil, sea buckthorn oil, keratin, aloe vera, and coconut oil. These ingredients contain moisturizing and anti-inflammatory compounds that will help replenish your scalp and hair, and leave you with a nice sheen. However, it's also important to remember that shiny hair also comes from eating nutritious foods, regulating your stress levels, minimizing the amount of heat styling you use, and getting your hair trimmed every few months.

But hey, a brand new shampoo is a great place to start when it comes to taking care of your hair. Ahead, Rubell share the six shampoos at every price point she uses herself (and recommends to clients) for shiny, all-around healthy hair.

Hask Argan Oil Repairing Shampoo & Conditioner — $15.00

“Hask Argan Oil Repairing Shampoo is great for medium-coarse hair types,” says Rubell. “Always gives my naturally wavy, thick hair a soft, bouncy finish and feels super healthy with ample shine after regular use.” She adds that this formula is also free of alcohol, sulfates, parabens, and other ingredients that may dry out your hair.

Biolage Hydrasource Shampoo — $32.00

Rubbel names this shampoo as one of her most reliable mainstays—especially in the drying winter months. “Its lightweight formula is a great choice for all hair types. With aloe as its star ingredient, it really helps to repair dry hair, no matter what the cause,” she says.

Oribe’s Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo — $49.00

This gorgeous bottle also happens to contain a beautiful formula that’s beloved by the beauty community. “Oribe’s Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo is blended with extracts and oils, Argan included, that will make your hair soft and shiny while protecting from existing breakage or further damage to the hair. I always have this shampoo in my weekly shower rotation,” says Rubell.

Amika’s The Kure Bond Repair Shampoo — $18.00

“This whole Kure line is excellent for strands that have experienced major damage. If you heat style every day, or have recently over-processed your hair, its star ingredient of sea buckthorn is going to be the reason your hair gets transformed back to a healthy shiny state while helping to fight against breakage,” she says. Shampoo to the rescue!

OGX Nourishing + Coconut Milk Moisturizing Shampoo for Strong & Healthy Hair — $6.00

This drugstore find is a total bargain, and still gets the job done. “OGX coconut milk shampoo is velvety to the touch and it leaves hair feeling that way too. I love any shampoo that can leave my hair strong, soft and shiny, and this formula made a noticeable impact and at a noticeable price point too,” says Rubell. This formula is especially great if you’re constantly yanking your hair back with hair ties. “The coconut oil and egg white blend in this shampoo can help improve elasticity, so if you experience a lot of breakage or wear your hair up a lot, this is a great option to help combat that potential breakage,” adds Rubell.

Virtue Labs Recovery Shampoo — $40.00

“Virtue Labs Recovery Shampoo is formulated with a rockstar alpha-keratin protein that literally fills in the cracks of your hair shaft’s damage,” says Rubell. “If you know you put your hair through the ringer with regular color services or exposure to heat, using this shampoo will help keep your strands strong to fight against that regular wear and tear.”
