Creating an epic at-home gym isn’t exactly easy when you’re tight on space. That doesn’t mean it's impossible—it just means you need to find the right space-saving machines to fit. Thanks to innovation, traditionally bulky machines, like treadmills and steppers, are now just as easy to own, whether you’ve got 500 or 5,000 square feet of space to go around. Now, hundreds of small-space treadmills exist to be sleek, slim, and even foldable, so when you’re not hitting your daily step count or training for your next big race, they can be tucked away, maximizing room around your home.

No matter your fitness goals or space restrictions, there's a small-space treadmill ready for action. Scroll to shop our favorites for every space, style, and budget.

Best small-space treadmills, at a glance

What to look for in a small-space treadmill

When curating this list, we looked for three main features in a small-space treadmill: compact design, functionality, and portability. As for the compact design, bulky treadmills just won’t cut it. Those living in tight quarters know that even a few inches of added bulk can make or break the amount of space you have available to you. Features like foldability, lightweight design, and the overall build of the treadmill were a top priority.

Second is function—what good is a treadmill if it doesn’t get the job done? Specs like speed, incline control (there are so many benefits to incline treadmill walking), resistance, and fitness monitors were all considered to appeal to different types of walkers and runners.

Finally, portability. Most, if not all, of the treadmills on this list can be easily folded and wheeled into closets, stored under beds, or carried into another room when they’re not being used. Tight spaces are sacred—and if you’re in search of a compact treadmill, it needs to be able to maximize space when you’re not using it..

The benefits of a foldable treadmill

According to Dianne Clemente, an equipment and projects manager at Crunch Fitness, there are multiple benefits of adding a foldable treadmill to your space. For starters, foldable treadmills are compact and—hence their name—fold down for storage when not in use. Aside from that, having a treadmill in your home can allow you to work out on your own schedule.

“Whether it’s fitting in a cardio session before a work meeting, avoiding bad-weather days by having your treadmill by your side, or avoiding rush hour crows at the gym, being able to control when you workout is a strong perk,” Clemente notes. Additionally, having a treadmill at home can allow you to do a variety of workouts at home, since many gyms offer online treadmill classes within their monthly subscription (our favorites are the Peleton App, Crunch+, and Melissa Wood Health).

How to choose a foldable treadmill

Before purchasing, there are a few things to consider when shopping for a foldable treadmill, including the settings, extra features, smart capabilities, and your overall space.

Space

Even though you can fold down the treadmill and tuck it away when not in use, Clemente says it’s still important to consider your space and ensure you have a little extra space around the machine. “You want to ensure that parts of the machine aren’t swinging out of your intended space,” she explains.

Settings

It’s also important to look at the setting features ahead of purchase. “Many machines already come with various workout settings, so make sure there are at least three settings to choose from,” Clemente explains. Setting features such as hills, intervals, and manual mode are a good place to start.

Extra Features

In addition to settings, consider any extra features a foldable treadmill might come with and how you can save on space by ditching some of the unnecessary highlights. With that in mind, Clemente says you don’t necessarily need a treadmill with a screen. “Most people working out at home place their treadmill in front of their TVs, use their tablets, or blast their own music, so there’s no need to get the embedded TVs when you have a bigger one next to you.

Smart Capabilities

“Finding equipment that can connect to your Apple Watch or Fitbit is a great motivator,” says Clemente. “Seeing the numbers displayed without breaking your stride can be an encouraging thing,” she adds. With this
