There’s nothing better than melting into a comfy couch or lounge chair. Given the amount of time we’re spending at home, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your furniture. And Carla Manly, PhD, clinical psychologist and author, says that having a cozy spot to sit in can have a huge influence on your mental health and feelings of safety.
“Let’s say you have a really great chair—immediately when you see it the brain associates it with comfort, safety, reading, a quiet time out,” says Dr. Manly. “Not only does the mind have an association with the thought ‘this chair is my safe space,’ but the body also has a muscle memory of the times that were spent there. And then the body can actually relax and the muscles can let down in the same way that the mind does.”
Dr. Manly explains that we’re drawn to certain fabrics and styles for a reason.
“So many of our muscle memories and our mental memories are formed in early childhood. A taste that we have, whether it’s for a leather couch or a beanbag chair, we often associate, without even realizing it, to either negative childhood memories or often comforting childhood memories,” she says. “They don’t even necessarily have to be childhood memories. They could be memories attached to an old boyfriend’s place or the college time.”
If you have a chair you don’t like or a couch that’s uncomfortable, it can impact you in ways you don’t even realize.
“If there is a space in our current dwelling that doesn’t feel right, it can actually trigger old memories,” she says. “Much of this is occurring on a purely unconscious level. Even a color or a fabric can either trigger really warm and comforting memories and thus make us feel more comfortable in the current space, or on the opposite end, it can trigger the unconscious negative memories and make us feel unwanted, unloved, on edge, and irritable.”
