When it comes to fitness fashion, Emily Schuman, founder of the lifestyle blog Cupcakes and Cashmere, admits her activewear game hasn’t always been as strong as it is today. “I’d wear a sports bra from college that was totally stretched out and a stained shirt because I thought, I’m working out, it doesn’t matter,” she says.

"You project a certain confidence when you’ve taken the time to get dressed."

But at a certain point (somewhere between starting her own business and becoming a mom—she has a two-year-old daughter) Schuman says she came to realize that “you project a certain confidence when you’ve taken the time to get dressed. Now, I make sure I’m looking my best—even when I work out."

Along the way, she's homed in on her favorite brands—Varley and Olympia Theodora—as well as a handful of foolproof style and beauty hacks she swears by post-sweat sesh.

Scroll down to see her go-to tips for pulling together an athleisure look like a fashion pro.

Current fitness fixation

JJ Dancer, a 90-minute class at Los Angeles' 3rd Street Dance that “doesn’t feel like working out—it’s like going to the club with girlfriends and just dancing.”

Pro styling tip

Neutrals are a go-to, but always with an interesting twist, like a sweatshirt in a luxe fabric with a cut-out back opening. “Coordinate without being too matchy matchy,” Schuman suggests.

Signature athleisure look

A cool pair of kicks, good pair of aviators, and a messy updo. “You look chic and cool, and it works even if you haven’t gone to work out,” she says.

Post-workout beauty hacks

After a good sweat sesh, Schuman has her self-care routine down to a science: dewy skin (she uses face oil or serum) and a bit of rose-tinted lip balm. The last step? Natural deodorant—she swears by Agent Nateur.

Schuman's not the only healthy gal sharing her wellness hacks, here are Arielle Charnas of Something Navy's fitness fashion essentials. Plus, 13 activewear tips for women who wear it 24/7.
