Chipotle just made a huge healthy change to its menu

Sometimes deciding on where to get a quick meal for lunch can feel like navigating a minefield. Subway has been known to dye its veggies, McDonald’s salad options are a far cry from what your nutritionist would recommend, and who knows how long those foods at the deli salad bar have been sitting out?

Then there’s Chipotle. It’s definitely one of the healthier fast-food options out there—especially since you can custom-make your own meals, nixing the less-than-nutritious stuff and getting a hit of healthy fats (AKA guac).

The chain has completely revamped its tortillas to be free of any chemicals whatsoever, and made with just flour, water, salt, oil, and yeast.

(The corn tortillas are made with just corn masa and water.) Eater reports that they are actually the first chain to create, manufacture, and serve a five-ingredient tortilla.

The change is part of an even bigger initiative, announced two years ago, to nix all GMOs and artificial ingredients. So what exactly were in the old tortillas? Some preservatives, like sorbic acid and calcium propionate, which gave ’em a longer shelf life. But, hey, no worries: Now the chain will just refrigerate their tortillas instead of just letting them sit out. (And possibly restock their supply more frequently.)

Chipotle CEO Steve Ells tells Eater that he doesn’t think customers will notice a difference and that the new tortillas taste pretty much the same, but still sees it as a huge win for everyone. Hey, it’s never a bad thing when restaurants serve more food, and fewer chemicals.
