women doing yoga and meditationSeptember 11th is always a day heavy with emotion. And this year, the feeling is compounded by the fact that Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

For some New Yorkers, a dedicated yoga class or a loving-kindness meditation might feel like the perfect way to address the day, manage its stress, and honor the lives lost.

So we’ve curated a list of events and activities that mark the anniversary in healthy ways.

MEDITATION

By Love Alone: A Day of Meditation
Pack a lunch and hop a ferry to the Parade Grounds on Governor’s Island, where some of New York City’s leading mediation teachers will lead a public practice of loving-kindness contemplation. 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., free, The Parade Grounds on Governor’s Island, www.theidproject.org

Honoring 9/11: Transforming Trauma from the Mind to the Body

Yoga For The Fallen: 9/11 Memorial Practice
This outdoor 90-minute slow flow vinyasa, led by Reflections Yoga founder and director Paula Tursi, will honor New York City firefighters. Laughing Lotus Benefit Class
All proceeds from Dana Flynn’s Sunday Revival class will be donated to Tuesday’s Children, an organization that provides support for families impacted by 9/11.  And teachers in all classes will include a loving-kindness meditation and a moment of silence in remembrance. RUNS

9/11 Heroes Run
Run or walk this 5K on Randall’s Island to support the Travis Manion Foundation, an organization that funds fellowships for wounded and disabled veterans, scholarships, and seminars for families who have lost loved ones in combat (most of whom were sent to war as a direct result of 9/11). Runners in 16 states and 6 countries will be completing the race with you. 9:00 a.m., $35, 20 Randall’s Island, www.911heroesrun.com

9/11 Memorial Run 
Run on the 6-mile loop in Liberty State Park from 9:00 a.m. until sundown, in a moving tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. Proceeds benefit Team Red, White and Blue, a nonprofit that helps wounded veterans reintegrate into society. 7:30 a.m., $50, Liberty State Park, 200 Morris Pesin Dr., Jersey City, NJ, www.teamrwb.org
