British chef and TV star Jamie Oliver is known for his efforts to eliminate unhealthy, processed foods from school lunches (goodbye pink slime) and replace them with fresh, veggie-heavy meals (hello baby carrots). His show, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” documented that crusade.
Now, Oliver has taken it one step further, with a global day of action that promotes fresh, healthy food and the knowledge and cooking skills needed to access and enjoy it.
The second annual Food Revolution Day takes place on May 17, and it will include events around the world that showcase healthy food and cooking and raise money for charities that support food education.
What kinds of food can help? Oliver, like us, is a fan of smoothies—made with fresh produce, in a shade of green. “Smoothies are usually the easiest way of encouraging your kids to try different types of fruit,” he says. “Kids will love to get involved with making these as well, because they can chuck it all in and blend it up themselves.”
Give it a shot with this recipe—one of Oliver’s personal favorites. —Lisa Elaine Held
Jamie Oliver’s Kiwi, Ginger, and Banana Smoothie
3 kiwi fruit
4 tablespoons oats
8 ice cubes
7 fl oz semi-skimmed milk
9 oz fat-free natural yogurt
¼-inch piece fresh ginger, finely grated
honey, to taste
Trim the ends of the kiwi fruit and stand them up on a work surface. Slice off the skin in vertical strips with a sharp knife and discard, then place the flesh in a juicer or very good blender. Add the remaining ingredients, apart from the honey, and whiz for around 30 seconds, or until smooth. Pour into 4 tall glasses and sweeten with honey, if you like.
