Sara Forte, the blogger behind Sprouted Kitchen, recently shared her genius salad-chopping technique on her Instagram Story, and it involves none other than a bowl, those voluptuous greens, and a sharp pair of kitchen shears. "I'm always looking for ways to clean one less item in the kitchen," she tells me. "I pull the ribs away—I don't care for the tough texture—rip it into big pieces into the mixing bowl, then go after it with scissors. This spares me the cutting board and knife, and also greens flying all over the counter."

To make a salad as flawless as Forte's, grab one large bundle of stemmed kale and a bowl larger than you think need. "This gives you space to maneuver through the greens and avoids them jumping out of the bowl," she says. Then, instead of mixing your dressing separately, save another dish and do it right in the bowl, too. "I usually use the juice of one small lemon, 2 Tbsp of olive oil, 1 tsp of maple syrup, 1 clove of finely-grated garlic, and a big pinch of salt and pepper."
After massaging your dressing into the kale to soften it up—and adding in any other toppings you want—you have a perfect summer salad right at your fingertips. Oh, and minimal cleanup waiting for you after you're done devouring the nutritious dish.
