Up until this year, I didn’t think body oil was necessary to have in my skin-care routine. It just seemed like an extra thing you slather onto your body to feel luxurious after indulging in a spa day. But after experiencing the transformative effects that the Le Prunier Plum Beauty Oil ($72) had on my acne-prone skin this summer, I can’t imagine my beauty regimen without it.

For sensitive and dry skin folks like me, body oils can often be more hydrating than lotions and creams. Their occlusive nature helps them to retain more of your skin's moisture.  “A body oil will provide a protective barrier to the dry skin and keep your skin texture smooth, while lotion tends to evaporate and not give the same tactile textural improvement you’d get from an oil,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, MD previously told W+G.

That said, I began my journey using the Le Prunier Plum Beauty Oil in early April. It’s a solution that delivers a one, two, three punch: it calms your skin, brightens its appearance, and locks in moisture where you need it most. From the dry strands on your head to the rough patches of skin on your cheeks and around your cuticles, you can use it on nearly all parts of your body.

But unlike some body oils on the market, this formula gets its strength from one very noteworthy source: plum oil. This is an ingredient naturally packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, it contains "high levels of omega fatty acids that soften and protect the skin; vitamin A, which enhances cell turnover; and vitamin E and polyphenols, which provide antioxidant benefits," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, MD. Plus, the solution is non-comedogenic (aka, it won't clog your pores), so you can rest easy if you have acne-prone skin.

The formula is a light honey color and has an almost watery-like consistency, which allows it to soak into your skin almost immediately. And since it's so absorbent, it won't make you look like a greasy donut. I was able to apply five drops on my face without needing a tissue to wipe off any excess residue—a true feat for oils, indeed!

I was also pleasantly surprised by how well the solution kept my cuticles from growing wildly out of control. FYI, I wear long acrylic nails and my cuticles are constantly dry. But after a week of applying a few drops of this to my nail beds, my cuticles felt a lot smoother and were less noticeable. The formula also has a natural fruit-like scent, but it isn't overpowering for those who prefer minimal to no fragrances.

Although you can apply a few drops directly onto your skin, the brand recommends mixing a drop or two with a moisturizing cream to "enhance its benefits." I personally like to put on a few drops after I slather my face with lotion. This helps to seal in my skin care and leave my face more supple. But the best part is that I haven't experienced any breakouts and my skin does have a subtle glow the morning after each use. Sure, the $72 price tag is a pretty steep investment, but given its brightening and hydrating power combo, it's totally worth it, IMO.
