Point blank: Social media has evolved. Where it may have once been used to share random snaps of poorly-lit meals, nowadays it’s a place to reveal some of the best discoveries, tips, tricks, and hacks society has to offer. And thanks to hashtags and views, it’s easier than ever to know which tips are worth the hype and which are mere shouts into the void. That’s why when we came across #renefurterer on TikTok—a hashtag that’s garnered over 24 million views—we knew we had to learn more.

For those that don’t know, René Furterer is a French haircare brand that’s renowned for its luxurious plant-based products that are said to be ultra-effective—both by the brand itself and TikTokers alike. It’s especially lauded for its scalp-stimulating, hair-thickening formulas—and as someone with ultra-fine hair (albeit a lot of it), I knew I had to give it a whirl to weigh the results for myself. (It also helps that the brand is having a site-wide sale from July 8-July 15 with the exclusive code, HOWL20—get all you need for 20 percent off!)

Like many beauty brands, René Furterer offers shoppers a quiz to uncover their optimal haircare routine. As expected, after I took it—and detailed the condition of my scalp and ends, the texture and type of my hair, my color processing history, my main concern (lack of volume), and whether or not I have thinning—I was directed to the Hair Purifying Routine, which includes the René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Shampoo ($60), Conditioner ($32), and Conditioning Spray ($30), as well as the Complex 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate ($50). And let me just say: Wow.

rene volumizing shampoo
René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Shampoo — $30.00

Originally $30, now $24

Formulated with carob extract, this shampoo naturally and noticeably thickens hair from root to tip, so you see all-over volume. Aside from carob, the “secret” ingredient that gives you most visible results is the dose of polysaccharides (a type of carb) which increases volume by individual cloaking each and every strand. It’s gentle enough to use every day and leaves hair silky and smooth.

René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Conditioner — $30.00

Originally $30, now $24

This Volumea’s sidekick conditions, strengths, and volumizes follicles with carob extract, polysaccharides, as well as inulin extract from chicory root that helps make hair even softer and easy to comb through for many types of hair.

René Furterer Complex 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate — $50.00

Originally $50, now $40

The shampoo, conditioner, and conditioning spray are fantastic, but this hair treatment is truly the star of the show. Once or twice a week, apply the treatment to hair, section by section. Massage into scalp and leave on for five to ten minutes, and then cleanse hair using the Volumea shampoo and conditioner. If you have an extra sensitive scalp, try the formula on your hand first, and definitely don’t leave it on for too long.

This pre-shampoo treatment increases microcirculation and helps other products work more effectively.

It took me just one use to use to understand just how effective René Furterer products are. While the Volumea products notably cleaned, conditioned, and detangled my strands (all without weighing them down and instead giving them a little lift), it was the Complex 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate that really stood out. Designed with a metal tip that dispenses the oil, the concentrate is easy to apply and a little goes a long way. I only left it on for five minutes—because it admittedly made my scalp intensely tingle the way some color treatments sometimes do—but when I dried my hair, my scalp was so stimulated that my roots reached upwards instead of laying flat against my scalp. Did I love how it smelled? No. Did I love how it felt? Absolutely not. Did I swoon over the results? 100 percent.

Don’t just take my word for it though. Hair transplant surgeon Dr. Alan J. Bauman, MD, ABHRS, IAHRS, FISHRS, who is the founder, CEO, and Medical Director of Bauman Medical Group, admits that he’s been repeatedly impressed by René Furterer products.

“I think they are safe for the scalp and non-drying to the hair and when used accordingly—after a full trichological (scalp) analysis—they perform exceptionally well,” he says. "Both myself and my in-house Certified Trichologist and HairCoach Kim Jenkins like how they incorporate botanicals into their products and have excellent natural vital ingredients. We think René Furterer products are truly worth the hype.”

Specifically, he applauds the scalp-soothing and -stimulating benefits of the products—namely the Complex 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate.

This is an essential oil-based pre-shampoo treatment that is great at detoxing the scalp and improving the overall scalp health,” he says. “It cleanses and restores balance to the scalp. The key essential oils in the product are orange and lavender. Orange essential oil is a natural cleanser and can also help provide nourishment to the hair follicles. Lavender essential oil improves overall scalp health by providing both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties to the scalp.”
