I’ve been working from home for a little over two years. At first, I relished in the ability to do my job and take meetings in yoga pants and acceptable tops (hack: wear black). I’d knock out my to-do list from bed and call my coworkers from the couch or on a walk with my dogs. I stocked up on various leggings and sweatpants, trying out new brands, spending cash on loungewear instead of on denim and dresses. But then, after about a year, it got old.
I missed pants. I missed the normalcy of life in general pre-pandemic. I needed the routine of getting ready in the morning, to separate my day uniform from my bedtime uniform and create healthier boundaries. So, I brushed the dust off my jeans and took them for a spin as I worked on a deadline from my kitchen table.
Maybe it’s because my body hadn’t had contact with clothing that wasn’t made of spandex or fastened with an elastic waistband in a long time, but I quickly realized I was uncomfortable. Were jeans always this stiff? “This sucks,” I thought to myself. So, I went on a stroll down Google lane and found the solution: The Allison Pant by Marine Layer.

Marine Layer Allison Pant — $68.00
The Allison Pant comes in ten different colors and patterns, including classic black, cherry red, striped, navy floral, checkered, and more.
The Allison Pant promises to be “casual and dressy at the same time,” and it delivers. Thanks to the elastic waistband and sleek straight leg, these pants look like slacks you’d wear to the office. Secretly, they still feel like pajamas. Made of TENCEL Lyocell/Hemp and a bit of spandex, the fabric feels like soft bedsheets. Yet, the design gives the pants structure (the dolphin hem is also a nice touch). Plus, they’re made ethically, thanks to Marine Layer’s goal to create high-quality and sustainable fashion.
The Allison Pant is also versatile—I dress it up with a button-up shirt that I tuck in (not that anyone but my dogs can see this detail, but it matters to me). Or, I pair it with a silky camisole tank for something simple but “I Tried”-esque. And when I log off work for the day, I throw on a T-shirt and sneakers and go on a walk with the dogs or the grocery store for dinner supplies.
While these pants will take you from day to evening, they’re not actually pajamas, so they don’t take you to bed. That’s what makes them so special. The Allison Pant is just the right amount of fancy I need. And when I’m logged off for the day and ready to binge old episodes of Grey’s Anatomy in bed, I’ve got my lineup of sweatpants waiting for me.
