Nutmeg, paprika, cinnamon, turmeric. This isn’t an ingredient list for an anti-inflammatory smoothie—it’s what your leggings drawer could look like this fall. Earthy shades of deep orange, burnt yellow, olive, and rusty brown are trending in activewear, popping up as color options at brands like Free People, Live The Process, Adidas x Wanderlust, and Outdoor Voices. One prime example is Nike’s collab with Los Angeles brand A.L.C., which reimagined the Cortez sneaker in a spicy faded orange—or “Terra Blush,” to be exact.
There might be a reason—besides it being pumpkin spice latte season—that these natural shades are taking over right now. Pantone’s color report for this season zeroed in on umber shades in particular, including one it’s dubbed Tawny Autumn Maple. “The color palette for fall 2017 leans more to warmth,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute .
“This season, shoppers are loving activewear pieces in rich, fall colors.”
Need more evidence that these new neutrals are about to be everywhere? Jennifer Bandier, founder of the fashion-forward fitness boutique Bandier, confirms that this fiery palette is flying off shelves. “This season, shoppers are loving activewear pieces in rich, fall colors,” she says. “We recently launched a varsity-inspired collection with Splits59, featuring crop tops and leggings in a burgundy ‘mulled wine’ color and a yellow ‘turmeric’ shade, and it’s been our top seller.”
Plus, spice-colored activewear is an obvious pick for capturing the mood of the current seasonal shift. “You can wear this collection to the gym, or to any fall activity like apple and pumpkin picking,” Bandier says. Not sure how to pull it off? Try paring yours with a leather jacket and a golden milk latte.
