Guess what: National Matcha Day is May 2nd. And while that's certainly a reason to celebrate, I’m a matcha girlie every day of the year. In fact, a hot matcha latte is almost always my go-to coffee shop order. Whether enjoyed as a tea or made into a rich, creamy latte, the earthy, nutty flavor of this ground-up green tea is not only delicious but also delivers the perfect amount of jitter-free energy.
If you’re unfamiliar with the popular beverage, “matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and shade-cultivated green tea leaves, known as tencha,” says Akio Tanaka, director at Matchaeologist.
This green tea variety has a unique (and often misunderstood) history as well. “Matcha traces its roots back to China during the Tang dynasty [around the year 600], but it was in Japan—introduced by the Zen monk Eisai in the 12th century—where it evolved into the ceremonial and cultural ritual we know today. Over centuries, matcha became deeply intertwined with Zen Buddhism and the Japanese tea ceremony, symbolizing mindfulness, harmony, and respect,” explains Tanaka.
And beyond its rich history, matcha boasts impressive health benefits, too. "Unlike regular green tea, which is steeped and discarded, matcha is consumed whole, delivering a concentrated dose of antioxidants, L-theanine, and naturally occurring caffeine1. This unique profile gives matcha its signature energizing yet calming effect,” Tanaka adds. (Disclaimer: If you're anemic or low-iron, however, talk to your health professional about drinking matcha before you dive in headfirst, as it can interfere with iron absorption in some cases.)
While many opt for (often pricy) matcha lattes or matcha green teas from their local cafe, more and more Americans are trying their hand at home brewing. It’s not just fun and saves money, but making matcha at home also allows you to be creative by adjusting milk, sweetener, and additional ingredient levels to your liking (if making a latte).
To support you in this pursuit, we’ve rounded up eight matcha brands that are not only super tasty but will give you an authentic brewing experience at home.

Brewing Matcha at Home
Brewing your first matcha at home can be an intimidating experience, but the process is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.
“The most traditional way to enjoy matcha is by preparing it as usucha (thin tea), which highlights its smooth texture and layered umami,” Tanaka explains. She walks us through how to do this properly:
- 1.Sift 1–2 grams (roughly 1/2 to 1 teaspoon) of matcha into a dry tea bowl (chawan) to remove clumps.
- 2.Add 70–80 mL of hot water, ideally between 70–80°C (158–176°F).
- 3.Using a bamboo whisk (chasen), whisk briskly in a zigzag (M or W) motion for about 15 seconds until a thick layer of fine foam forms on the surface.
To make a latte, simply add this mixture to a milk of your choice, maybe with a touch of sweetener.
The 8 Best Matcha Brands
“Matcha is not just a beverage—it’s a cultural expression, a wellness ritual, and a mindful experience. Choosing high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha is key to experiencing its full flavor and benefits.
