Taryn Toomey Is Launching a Sweat-Free Class That Aims to Banish Your Stress for Good
Taryn Toomey quickly became a fitness phenom after launching her fitness method, The Class, in 2013. Now she's adding a totally different session to her schedule, and its goal is to help you shake off unwanted stress.
"I took all the parts of The Class that I find to be powerful and simple and paired them to create something that can be done anywhere [for] great relief."
While The Class is best summed up as an ultra-cathartic boutique workout that uses the philosophy of yoga and the athleticism of boot camps, its younger sibling, The Class Relieve, will be a 20-minute way to clear your mind of chaos and say goodbye to any tension that's been building up. (Oh, and bonus points for the sweat-averse: You won't need a hair wash afterward.)
"I took all the parts of The Class that I find to be powerful and simple and paired them to create something that can be done anywhere [for] great relief," Toomey says. "It will give people a basic toolbox of things to use when they're at work or at their mother-in-law's house or anywhere they can't go on a run or meditate and do any of their basic mindfulness practices. It gets you out of your head and into your body, and that's especially important when you're in a situation that's stressful or feeling a lot and you don't have a channel or a space to move it."
Relieve officially launches at the New York City studio on September 11 at 11:30 a.m. and will re-occur every Monday moving forward for (sign up for the $15 class here). But what can you expect before you head in to try it? Well, a whole lot of zen—that's for sure. Toomey starts each class by having everyone close their eyes and engage the breath, taking a moment to notice where the mind is. From there, you won't be doing anything that brings your heart rate up. Instead, you'll be doing lots of shaking, contracting, and meditating.
If you're wondering why Toomey decided to add this new style of class to her already-packed schedule, there's a solid reason: As someone who worked in corporate America before becoming a fitness guru (she's a former Ralph Lauren account exec!), she had a vested interest in creating a quick way to de-stress that would make a big impact in an otherwise super-stressful environment.
"When I'm starting to feel a lot of pressure, doing some of the practices we do in this class creates an opening for clearing the mind."
"I used to work in corporate, and my husband works in finance, so I know there's a lot of stress in the structure of that fast-paced environment. It made me think about how easy it is to bring in the components that can help, because all you need is you to do it," she says. "I know when I'm starting to feel a lot of pressure, doing some of the practices we do in this class creates an opening for clearing the mind."
When it comes to Toomey's own daily meditation practice, she's become extra skilled at squeezing in time for some much-needed clarity.
"I try to do a mindful meditation practice each morning before I head out the door; I just follow my breath. I usually wake up, do my morning routine, get my girls breakfast, then go into my bedroom and take 20 minutes to meditate," she says. "When I don't, I start to feel a little more fragmented, scattered, and emotional. It's easy to skip over it, but planning it like you plan anything else is one of the most important things you can do."
And if you want to take your meditation game to Toomey's level, grab a candle: "I like to light a candle then blow it out at the end as an opening and a closing."
