Whether you’re driving across the country with your girls or flying to explore a dreamy destination on your bucket list, sticking strictly to healthy travel snacks presents a challenge. Your stomach can only handle so many salty, greasy fast food or gas station snacks before it revolts. Before functional medicine doctor Mark Hyman, MD, hits the road or takes to the air, he won’t leave home without his trusty “emergency snack pack.”

Dr. Hyman spends more than half of his time traveling for work and leisure. “If I didn’t keep myself healthy while on the road, there’s absolutely no way I could perform optimally,” he writes. To feel his best at all times, he makes it his mission to stick to real food both while traveling from city to city and once he arrives.

When he’s driving, Dr. Hyman always keeps a cooler in the backseat to stash his travel snacks. “You can pack dry goods like nuts and seeds or canned salmon, but also have fresh goodies on hand—such as celery, carrots, snap peas, and radishes. All of these tend to hold their fresh crunch, especially in the cooler,” he writes. He also has a fruit combo that gives you plenty of filling fiber, antioxidants, healthy fat, and immunity-boosting vitamins: “Apples, berries, pomegranate, avocados, and lemons also fare well on the road.”

When it comes to traveling by plane, Dr. Hyman recommends packing nut butters, kale chips, nuts and seeds, and some fruit. You can throw chopped veggies in a reusable Stasher bag, too. And no matter the mode of transportation, add some protein to the mix. “Nut butters, hummus, and tahini are special treats when you need to nosh,” writes Dr. Hyman. With all these healthy travel snacks on hand, there’s no way you’ll wind up hangry on the way to your destination.
