In addition to its fitness—including swim—tracking abilities, the Versa 2 offers Fitbit’s excellent sleep tracking technology, 24/7 heart monitoring, and Alexa capabilities, among other features. You can also make use of Fitbit Premium, a monthly subscription service which ups the device’s fitness offerings by offering you personalized coaching and goal guidance.
For those on more of a budget who still want a fitness-centric tracker, the Fitbit Inspire HR is a lighter-weight, minimalist option which is also built to withstand water exposure up to 50 meters. It auto identifies your exercise type and tracks it accordingly, whether it’s running, doing yoga, or swimming. It also tracks steps, sleep, calorie burn, and heart rate.
3. Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro, $155
The Gear Fit2 Pro is designed for swimming—it even has a swim mode which locks the touchscreen so the device doesn’t mistake strokes for swipes. The company’s partnered with the Speedo On app to deliver data around your lap work, too. Pool time isn’t the only exercise the Gear Fit2 Pro keeps tabs on, either. Through a variety of different apps, it can track running, walking, spinning, and more, while also keeping an eye on sleep, diet, and other healthy lifestyle measurements. The Galaxy Fit, which is likewise water resistant up to 50 meters, is a solid, cheaper option, too.
4. Huawei Band 3 Pro, $70
This under $100 touchscreen watch is water resistant up to five ATM. It features fitness and (sophisticated) sleep data as well as training tips, time-to-move notifications, heart rate measurements, GPS, and access to incoming calls and messages from your smartphone.
5. Garmin Vivosmart 4, $100
This slim, lightweight touchscreen tracker is, like all Garmin wearables, water resistant up to 50 meters. The device offers fitness and swim metrics, sleep data, and messaging capabilities. Its uniqueness lies, however, in its “body battery” function, which tells you how much energy you, the individual, have left at any given moment based on a combination of metrics. It also features a pulse oxygen sensor, which can’t officially diagnose any issues (like sleep apnea or atrial fibrillation) but can give you a sense as to whether or not you’re within normal range for you to take to your doctor.

The Polar Vantage can handle indoor and outdoor, open water swimming with a resistance of up to 50 meters. It offers tracking profiles for 130 sports—though it’s more useful for some (e.g. running, swimming) than it is for others (e.g. weightlifting)—and some training features, too. You can also monitor your heart rate and nightly sleep. As this isn’t a touchscreen and it doesn’t have smartphone capabilities such as text and call, it’s ideal for individuals looking to focus only on their fitness.
7. Apple Watch 5, $399-$799
Personally, it makes me nervous to imagine taking a device this pricey into the water, but apparently it’s just as water resistant as any of the others on this list (5 ATM, or up to 50 meters). The company is so confident in the watch’s ability to be submerged, in fact, that it offers pool and open water swim tracking. It similarly tracks a wide variety of activities—running, spinning, HIIT, etc.—in a way that helps you view progress over time and meet personalized goals.
