I’m constantly on the hunt for skin-care products that treat wrinkles and hyperpigmentation (which are two of my main concerns these days), but most of what’s out there is just too intense for my sensitive skin. Typically, these formulas are made with strong retinoids or high percentages of alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and in the past have caused my skin to either dry up or break out.
So when I saw Kelli Anne, a celebrity makeup artist, raving about Algenist Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel ($85) on Instagram, I had to find out more. On Sephora’s website, customer reviews praised the product’s effectiveness for treating hyperpigmentation, discoloration, and signs of aging—even on sensitive skin! I was sold.

Since then, I’ve been using the peel every Sunday night for almost six months, and it has completely changed my complexion. The secret to its success is its triple acid complex. This unique ingredient has the perfect blend of AHAs (which melt away dead skin cells), BHAs (which clear pores from the inside out), and PHAs (which exfoliate and aid in hydration). Together, they effectively reduce hyperpigmentation. Though there are some pretty powerful actives in the mix, they’re gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin, and the formula as a whole is designed to minimize dryness and irritation.
Acids aside, the formula’s other ingredients aren’t worth breezing over. The brand’s patented, algae-derived alguronic acid helps to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, and pure vitamin C works to brighten the skin and further even out discoloration.
The peel is bright blue with a thick, sticky texture, but don’t let that deter you. When I tried it on my skin for the first time, it felt immediately cooling, and had an almost instant de-puffing effect. To my surprise, I actually did see a noticeable difference in my complexion after only a single use. My face felt fresh and bright, and was not at all irritated from the peel (a win!). It was love at first use, and I knew this product would become a mainstay in my skin-care routine for the long run.
After about six months of using this product every week, I’ve noticed an improvement in the discoloration from my acne scarring, and my skin looks brighter and more even overall. It has also brightened up my under-eye circles and reduced the crow’s feet lines that show up when I smile.
This peel has completely changed my perspective on acid-based skin-care products, and introduced me to a world where I can use AHAs and BHAs without any repercussions (read: irritation). It is one of the best parts of my Sunday, and makes me feel refreshed and ready to tackle the week ahead.
