Gone are the days when all we had for personal lubricant was KY Jelly. Not that there's anything wrong with the original KY Jelly—it certainly can get the job done. But for those with fussier, more sensitive vulvas, vaginas, and penises, it could leave us, well, unsatisfied to say the least. Enter: organic lubes, the chemical-free, natural alternative to more traditional ingredients (which can include glycerin and petroleum jelly). Whether you have sensitive skin and have to be extra particular about what you put "down there," or just are just drawn to natural formulations, organic lubes are sure to please.

"Using organic lube is a way to get the closest to natural ingredients in their purest form," says sexologist Marla Renee Stewart, MA, and in-house sexpert for sexual wellness brand Lovers. "When we introduce chemicals into our system, this may hurt our immune systems and our bodies might not react in ways that we like or need. Organic is most beneficial for folks who strive to have the closest to all-natural as possible.  Most of the time, certified organic lubes are best for most bodies."

What is organic lube?

So... what exactly makes organic lube different from the rest of 'em? It's all about the ingredients—Stewart says it's all on the label (which there are a lot of on lubricants). Look for organic lubes that have that USDA-certified emblem to confirm they are actually organic. This is the only guarantee that the ingredients meet the USDA's specific standards, like being grown on clean soil and not being loaded with any GMOs.

That being said, that doesn't mean other "natural" lubes can't do the trick—you just need to look at the ingredient label. Stay away from things like glycerin and parabens, which can often trigger vaginal flare-ups, as well as any added hormones, artificial fragrances, fake flavors, and so on.

"Any kind of polymer or ingredients that you can't pronounce easily are a good sign that it's not natural or organic," Stewart says. "Look for all natural and whole food ingredients or herbs... On most of these bottles, you'll find that there's indicators of which ingredients are certified organic."

Ready to make the switch to sleek, silky organic formulations? Here's a list of the best organic lubes to add to your nightstand.

16 of the best organic lubes sure to please

Jo Organic, NaturaLove Lubricant — $27.00

Jo Natural is one of Stewart’s favorites. It’s an organic water-based lubricant, which means it’s safe on silicone toys and condoms. “What’s also fantastic about this lube is the fact that it only has five ingredients and most nutritionists encourage you to put whole foods into your body or foods that contain less than five ingredients,” Stewart says. “So this is a win-win situation, considering that it’s ideal for oral sex.”

Jo Organic, NaturalLove Strawberry Fields — $20.00

Stewart recommends this strawberry-flavored lube if the original isn’t your thing. While some lubes have that sticky, artificial taste, this fruity flavoring is natural, making it another ideal option for oral sex.
