Everyone needs a little extra workout motivation this time of year, when snuggling up in front of the TV is much more enticing than trudging through the snow and slush ponds to the gym. (Thank you, PolarVortex 3.0.)
Gellatly, also a media influencer who wears tons of hats (he’s the managing partner at brand solutions agency Team Epiphany and co-founder of 13thWitness, where he’s produced projects for Kanye West, Drake, and Nike), knows both music and fitness. His mornings kick off with running or weight training almost every day, and he never misses his weekly soccer game at Chelsea Piers.
Varied workouts call for varied playlists, he says. Like reading the crowd at a club before choosing the next song, a good workout playlist fits the occasion.
“There’s the ‘I want to go for a head-clearing, long run” kind of playlist. Those are kind of meandering and just fast-paced enough,” he explains. “Then there’s the ‘I have 45 minutes to get it in before work’ playlist. Those are usually full-throttle, like downing something super caffeinated while running to the gym—to go running.”
