A fitness-loving DJ’s motivating playlist to get you out of that winter workout rut

It's hard to get moving if you've been sweating to "Applause" on repeat all year. DJ Sky Gellatly created this energizing playlist to help.

Everyone needs a little extra workout motivation this time of year, when snuggling up in front of the TV is much more enticing than trudging through the snow and slush ponds to the gym. (Thank you, PolarVortex 3.0.)

And changing up your playlist is one tried-and-true way to get moving, says Sky Gellatly, one half of the DJ duo SNDCLSH, with Lupe Fiasco.

Gellatly, also a media influencer who wears tons of hats (he’s the managing partner at brand solutions agency Team Epiphany and co-founder of 13thWitness, where he’s produced projects for Kanye West, Drake, and Nike), knows both music and fitness. His mornings kick off with running or weight training almost every day, and he never misses his weekly soccer game at Chelsea Piers.

Varied workouts call for varied playlists, he says. Like reading the crowd at a club before choosing the next song, a good workout playlist fits the occasion.

“There’s the ‘I want to go for a head-clearing, long run” kind of playlist. Those are kind of meandering and just fast-paced enough,” he explains. “Then there’s the ‘I have 45 minutes to get it in before work’ playlist. Those are usually full-throttle, like downing something super caffeinated while running to the gym—to go running.”

The playlist he created for us is the hard-core one. It’s rushing, high-energy, and full of remixes you may not have heard before—perfect for injecting some new energy into your winter workout routine, and getting those earbuds in and running shoes on. —Lisa Elaine Held
