Class Action: Ary Nunez’s Ninja Fit Club

Next week, Rihanna's trainer kicks off an amazing martial-arts-based boot camp for those of us who aren't necessarily rockstars.

Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!

Ary Nunez

Ary Nuñez’s non-stop energy, bad-ass training methods, and quirky sense of humor are usually only experienced by Rihanna (and other similarly elite celebs).

But this month, the Brooklyn native is bringing her martial-arts based boot camp to those of us who aren’t necessarily rockstars—via six weeks of classes in a swank courtyard at the Out NYC hotel.

Nuñez’s equipment-free class mixes traditional conditioning with martial arts and dance (she has three black belts and was a professional dancer). We rocked our way through sequences that involved punches, kicks, and lunges, then rounds of moving squats, arm balances, and cartwheels.

And Nuñez focuses on rhythm and smooth transitions to keep the class in sync with energizing music provided by a live DJ, DJ Ary NunezMarvilous. (And yes, Riri was definitely on the playlist). It felt more like a dance party than a workout, just with more sweat and more practical footwear.

To top it off, Nuñez may be the most motivating trainer I’ve ever worked with. She slowly demonstrates tricky martial arts sequences and gradually makes them more complicated, while she simultaneously makes you laugh and reminds you that “you are all ninjas!”

Yes, we found love in an awesome, sweaty, New York place.

Who’s it for: Kickboxing lovers. Stealthy workout ninjas. Celeb stalkers. Anyone who loves a workout party.

Book it or skip it: Book it!

Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m., July 31–September 2, $45 per class, $240 for six. To sign up, email [email protected]
