First came 50 Shades of Kale. Now, 50 Shades of Fitness. Which makes us go 50 Shades of…Ugh.
Still, this February-only workout bondage class, which is free (non-members included), is actually a tough, interval-based class that gets in cardio, plyometrics, strength-training, and core work. And it’s taught by NYSC master trainer Geri-Nikole Love. (You can’t make this stuff up.)
Class is divided into four sections. In the first, a “trust relay,” you choose a partner and get hot and heavy together doing relay sprints and wheelbarrow races, with the person on their hands donning a blindfold.
The blindfold stays for the second section of plyometrics and balance exercises. (Once you’re ready to peek, you may be facing in a new direction.) The third portion splits the class into core work on a mat and strength training using a body bar.
Finally, at the end, its time for Bands & Bondage. A small resistance band goes around your ankles and you grip a larger band in front of you while doing exercises like kneeling bicep curls and plank with your legs pushing out against the band (ouch!).
While the class did not inspire me to visit a West Village sex shop, it did leave my arms and legs slightly sore the next day. Which is what I was more interested in, I swear. —Lisa Elaine Held
