Kate Hudson knows a thing or two about fitness (and so does her famous mom, as the world recently discovered). In a recent interview with Shape, the actress revealed how she likes to work out based on her mood—so we’re not the only ones who like to work on our jabs when we’re stressed.

The Fabletics co-founder has basically tried every workout under the sun (no surprise when you look at her abs), so she has a vast knowledge of what works and what doesn’t, depending on how she feels. Her number-one philosophy? Listen to your body.

“When I exercise, I need to connect to myself and see how I’m feeling at the moment, because my mood is constantly changing,” Hudson tells Shape. But no matter what, she loves to squeeze in a good sweat sesh. How to pair the right workout with your emotional state, for awesome mind-body alignment?

Read on for Kate Hudson’s guide to working out, based on your mood.

When you want to feel your strongest…

Do Pilates. Hudson discovered the workout when she was 19, and the core-strengthening moves got her hooked. “It’s the workout my body really responds to,” she tells Shape. “Pilates is always challenging. The advanced moves are amazing, but so hard. I also love TRX because it’s similar to Pilates in that you use your own body weight. But for me, Pilates is the best.”

When you want to feel free…

Go for a hike, a long walk, or a bike ride. Growing up in Colorado as well as California, Hudson was always outdoors—and still tries to be, no matter where she is. “I’m a nature girl,” she says in the interview. “If I’m in Amsterdam, I get on a bike, ride everywhere, and really see the place. I love that freedom, which you can’t get in a car. In New York City, if I’m staying downtown and have a meeting uptown, I’ll put on my earphones, listen to great music, and just walk.”

When you need to get out aggression…

Do something intense, like boxing—because sometimes you just need to punch it out. “Sometimes I just need to do aggressive routines, like boxing,” Hudson tells the magazine. “I also recently tried a popular new workout in LA by Taryn Toomey, called the Class, and I loved it. It’s very cool but definitely for people who are really into pushing themselves hard.”

When you can’t get to the gym…

Do a quick workout at home with an app. The fit star loves QE2, a full-body routine created by her Pilates teacher, Nicole Stuart. “It keeps me in tip-top shape,” says Hudson. “Then there’s Hot5, which I love because each workout is only five minutes long. When I’m in a hotel room and feeling jet-lagged, I can do one or two and it really gets me going. I also like Sworkit. You can do it anywhere, even in the smallest space, and break a good sweat in just 15 to 20 minutes.”
