We’re talking, of course, about Amazon Prime Day 2023—that exciting, rare, absolutely-can’t-miss-it two-day sale that comes along only once a year. Bigger than Black Friday? Honestly, quite possibly. Skin care, hair products, shoes, dresses, tech—the sky’s the limit when it comes to the deals you can find during this sales event extravaganza.

While we don’t have the official date for this year’s Prime Day sale event, it typically occurs sometime in mid-July. Plus, we do have a host of information to get you ready for the big day.

So, what is Amazon Prime Day, exactly?

Prime Day is a two-day sale that occurs on Amazon every year. You can score incredible deals on all shopping categories across the site, from fashion and beauty to home and tech. We’re talking thousands of offers you won’t find anywhere else, and only for 48 hours. The sale isn’t necessarily available exclusively to Amazon Prime members, but many of the deals won’t appear to you unless you’re a member—so if you still haven’t joined, now’s the best time to sign up (a 30-day trial is free, and after that, it's $15 a month).

"Amazon Prime Day is a great way to save on items you need," says Trae Bodge, smart shopping expert at Truetrae.com. "It aligns with the 'Black Friday in July' sale period, so shoppers are accustomed to shopping around this time of year."

And since Amazon Prime offers perks like free two-day shipping, or in some cases even free overnight shipping, you sure don’t have to wait long for those purchases you make during Prime Day—as well as the rest of the year.

When is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon just announced that Prime Day will be hosted July 11-12.

What's new with this year's Prime Day?

This year, Amazon is rolling out select, invite-only deals for high-ticket items, particularly on products expected to sell out quickly. The details are still unfurling, but effectively, Prime members can get early access to deals before everyone else does (and before the goodies all sell out.) Think: Big-screen TVs, computers, fancy headphones, and more.

What are the best things to buy on Prime Day?

We know, we know—you’re waiting on pins and needles for the best Amazon Prime Day deals for 2023. (We’re right there with you!) While the deals haven’t officially been announced yet, Amazon has already launched some early sales and savings across multiple shopping categories. Think fashion, beauty, electronics, tech, home, kitchen …. you name it, there’s a category and a sale within it. "Tech is really the star of the show," says Bodge. "The most exciting deals will be on Amazon brands, like Echo, Fire, and Ring. We also often see strong deals from other brands on items like TVs, laptops, tablets, and phone accessories."

It’s a great opportunity to pick up items that typically don’t go on sale, or have steeper discounts than other times of the year—think brands like Ray-Ban, or items like blow-dryer brushes and gel manicure sets. There are even discounts to different Amazon subscription services like Kindle Unlimited and Audible.

Some tips and tricks for scoring big on Prime Day

Thanks to Bodge, we're now armed with a host of tips for shopping Amazon Prime Day like a true pro. "There will be a dizzying number of deals on Prime Day, but sometimes you can save even more!" she says.

Tip 1: Apply for the Prime Visa.
"Periodically, Amazon offers an instant bonus once you're approved, like a $100 Amazon gift card," Bodge says. It gives you 5 percent back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases, and she says you may even be able to score additional bonuses or discounts by using the card during Amazon Prime Day.

Tip 2: Take advantage of Amazon tools.
Bodge urges shoppers to use tools like the app or Assistant browser extension to search for deals. "You can search by category and item name, and there are filters like percentage off and price," she says. Plus, you can even add items to your cart and then click "save for later" to see whether they're on sale once Amazon Prime Day arrives.

Tip 3: Set shopping alerts.
Bodge recommends setting shopping alerts on a site like Slickdeals, which will send you notifications when items you're watching go on sale.

Tip 4: Use CouponCabin.
Bodge loves the Sidekick browser extension from CouponCabin, which pops up and runs offers and coupons for you at checkout as you shop on Amazon. "The extension will cycle through several coupon codes to see if any are valid," she says. "If there is, you'll automatically see it applied to your purchase!"

Other shopping extensions our editorial commerce director, Gina Vaynshteyn, uses—and will be using on Prime Day—are Honey and Rakuten.
