When an all-black activewear ensemble is chic and the easiest option, why fuss with anything else? One word: navy.

Though the blue hue’s usually viewed as the preppy sister of sexy black—the Ashley to its Mary-Kate, if you will—dark blue is suddenly more in-demand than ever, especially when it comes to leggings.

“Black is a wardrobe staple, but our customers always ask for navy leggings,” says Jennifer Bandier, founder of fitness fashion paradise Bandier. “There are so many different [shades], so navy is a great basic color that can mix and match with anything.”

Just ask Arielle Noa Charnas, the fashion blogger behind Something Navy who is somewhat of a pro when it comes to dressing in her favorite hue. (In addition to naming her blog after the shade, she even collaborated on an activewear collection with Koral that’s all—you guessed it—navy.)

“Navy just exudes this type of edginess, yet it’s still classy and sophisticated,” she explains. “And while black might be best for night, navy is really perfect for any occasion—year round, day or night.”

Her only rule when styling navy leggings? Pay attention to prints. “When mixing with a pattern, make sure there is navy somewhere if it’s a multi-colored print,” she wisely advises. “If it’s a classic print like leopard, navy is the perfect pairing!”

Ready to feel blue? Here are the season’s best navy leggings—bye, basic black!
