It's August, which basically means it's Halloween—I don't control the seasons, so don't @ me. In all seriousness, the time for transitional apparel is upon us, even if you're still sweating through 90-degree days. In a few weeks' time, the nights will become noticeably cooler, and you'll probably want to rethink all those summer dresses you were wearing out to dinner (or at least bring a cardigan with.)

Staring blankly at your closet and not sure where to start because all you bought this season was shorts and tanks? We've got you. One of our favorite places to shop transitional clothing is Free People, since the brand is good at making gorgeous, lightweight—yet durable!—clothing that can easily be layered. And lucky for all of us, Free People is currently having a midsummer sale, which offers markdowns on tops, dress, jackets, and more.

Go forth and grab a few pieces that are summery enough for now, but will give you the coverage you need for those crisp, early autumn days.

The best of Free People's midsummer sale

beach babe tunic
Beach Babe Tunic — $70.00

Originally $98, now $70

A tunic is the best weather compromise, especially this one which is short enough to pair with jeans, but long enough to throw on over your swimsuit. The romantic bell sleeves will make your entire ensemble stand out, as will the ruffled hems.

Sizes available: XS-X (L and XL are already sold out)

city slouch pants
City Slouch Boyfriend Pants — $110.00

Originally $138, now $110

Everyone needs a pair of easy pants. These are them. Made of a soft cotton-lyocell blend, the City Slouch trousers come very close to pajama territory, save for their more structured fit. Mid-rise, loose, cargo-style, these pants feature a drawstring waist that makes wear pants easier than ever.

Sizes available: XS-XL

overalls
Sutton Utility Overalls — $130.00

Originally $198, now $130

These overalls are begging to be worn this late summer/early fall. You can wear them with a tank while giving your legs some coverage, or with a long sleeve shirt when the air gets nippy. This pair in particular have splatter paint detailing, so giving them a worn-in look that’s extra effortless. The leg fit is relaxed, so you’ll always feel comfortable.

Sizes available: XS-L (sold out in XL)

it takes two dress
It Takes Two Sleeve Mini Dress — $40.00

Originally $148, now $40-$45 (depending on color)

This dress is actually part of an individual brand under Urban Outfitters Inc. (URBN) called Nuuly, so you’re not only getting a really good deal, but you’re helping save the planet by reducing waste. This particular dress is in “like new” condition, so while you probably shouldn’t except that new, crisp clothing feeling, this item will hardly feel worn.

Style-wise, we love the long sleeves and open back—and when it gets too cold, you can always pair it some tights. Make sure to pay attention to the sizing and dimensions, because this dress isn’t eligible for returns.

Sizes available: XS-L

denim
Denim Studded Shirt — $148.00

Originally $270, now $148

It’s hard to look away from this gorgeous star-studded denim jacket—it’ll immediately become the coolest piece of denim you own. Details like western-inspired stitching and raw bottom hem give it a more “lived in” look and feel, and the fit is on the looser side, so you can easily layer it without feeling too snug.

Sizes available: XS, X, L (selling out quickly)

jumpsuit
Shayla Halter Jumpsuit — $108.00

Originally $148, now $110

One and done—that’s the idea with a jumpsuit. It’s an easy way to put a whole outfit together, and you only have to wear one item of clothing (although we like that this one has a button-up front, so you can wear it over a bikini or bandeau top, and just unbutton for another pop of color and texture). The retro design and wide-leg silhouette is giving ’60s and ’70s, so it’ll never really go out of style.

Sizes available: XS-XL

arlo cashmere cardigan
Arlo Cashmere Cardi — $100.00

Originally $158, now $100

Nothing feels more special than cashmere sweater, and we’re eyeing this one that comes in three colors (black, caramel, and dusty pink). With its cool, cropped and boxy fit, it’s cozy but still light and casual. You can wear it with your summer tanks and dresses for a bit of warmth—and look good doing it. The only downside? It’s dry clean only.

Sizes available: XS-L (sold out in XL)

jayson ringer tee
Jayson Ringer Tee — $30.00

Originally $68, ow $30

Throw this pullover in your tote for when you need it later at night—you’ll thank yourself. Slouchy, soft, and lightweight, it’s truly a transitional weather essential. We like the details like the waffle knit material and scooped neckline.

Sizes available: XS-XL
