What the Heck Is a Sex Serum? Meet the Product That Promises Smooth Sexual Sailing

I know, I know, there are already products dedicated to keeping things flowing smoothly in the bedroom—so what is sex serum and why did you need it? Well, as a reminder, personal lubricants exist in three main forms—silicone-based, water-based, and oil-based—and help to simulate wetness for a little more glide during sex play. Meanwhile, arousal oil works to stimulate wetness and increase sensitivity for elevated pleasure. The reason a sex serum may be a worthy addition to your sexual wellness rotation, then, is because it combines the best of those two products.

Take, for example, the recently launched WLDKAT Prebiotic + pH Balanced Sex Serum ($45), which aims to decrease vaginal dryness like an oil or lube would, and increases blood flow to the genitals for high-impact pleasure, like an arousal oil. What’s unique about WLDKAT, though, is that it's water-based, not oil-based. Since oil can degrade the integrity of latex condoms, it’s not ideal for all partnered play, but since this product is water-based, it's condom-compatible and can get you turned on like a light bulb. Furthermore, since it includes CBD, it wants you to get turned on and chilled out.

"The blend of the water-based ingredients like aloe vera juice [makes it] safe for use with condoms, and the CBD does wonders for relaxation and getting you and your bits in the mood," says WLDKAT founder and CEO, Amy Zunzunegui, who recommends applying it five to 10 minutes before sex to get the ingredients working. At her recommendation (and my own intrigue), I decided to try it for myself.

Here's what happened when I tried the WLDKAT sex serum.

When I tried WLDKAT sex serum, I first noticed that it offered a different slickness compared to other arousal oils I've used. It didn't pack the same high-voltage aphrodisiac punch, but, perhaps thanks to the CBD, I felt relaxed into an almost surreal slow-moving state of arousal.

"CBD is a known humectant—meaning it draws moisture to the skin—so this may help the area feel more lubricated and moist, says Lucky Sekhon, MD, fertility specialist and board-certified OB/GYN. "Also, CBD can be absorbed through the skin and bind cannabinoid receptors, which can have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and relaxing effects on the area, locally."

And those effects aren't the only ones of the prebiotic WLDKAT sex serum that appeal to vaginal wellness—it's also pH-balanced. As Dr. Sekhon has previously told Well+Good, products that aren’t pH balanced can disturb the microbiome, or the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina. Products that are at about the same pH level of the vagina (the magic number is about 4 on a scale of 1 to 14) can help eliminate any down-there issues from arising. Or at least not create new ones.

"The pH-level of your vagina is slightly different than the rest of your body, so we formulated the sex serum with that in mind," says Zuzunegui. "In terms of prebiotic, the sex serum has lactobacillus ferment, which specifically helps fight off [bacterial vaginosis] BV and also fights the imbalance of the bacteria in that area."

To wit, a sex serum is multipurpose and safe to play with others—with personal lubricants, with latex condoms, and with sexual partners. So if you want to harness the power of a subtle, soothing, slow-build arousal that's safe to use with condoms, this sex serum could make a wonderful addition to your nightstand.
