But there’s one category that’s often overlooked when putting together a gym outfit: jewelry.
While you’re most likely not putting on earrings and bracelets specifically for a workout, there are lots of pieces that you can wear 24/7, including while you sweat. In other words, you can jazz up a work outfit or date night look and still easily transition to gym mode without having to store your jewels in your bag.
Of course, there are some instances—hello, swollen fingers—where you’ll definitely want to slip off the jewelry pre-workout, so as to not hurt yourself. But certain pieces are basically made to stay out of your way as you plié or pike. Look for earrings that don’t dangle below your earlobe, rings that lay flush to your finger, short necklaces that won’t hang down when you’re inverted, and soft bracelets that aren’t going to pinch your wrist while you’re counting down from 30 in a forearm plank.
And there are some best practices when it comes to keeping your sparkly stuff, well, sparkly. “If your jewelry is plated, as opposed to solid gold and sterling silver, we suggest removing it during your workout because the plating will wear off faster if you’re routinely perspiring in it,” explains Sriya Karumanchi, the PR and marketing manager behind New York City’s delicate jewelry destination, Catbird. “Rings can be kept on based on personal comfort and preference, but make sure to remove them and wash and fully dry your hands before putting them back on—moisture and soap build-up on rings causes them to look lackluster.”
