If a sneaker and a ballet flat had a baby, it’d be Allbirds’ new Tree Breezer style

Now that sneakers have been embraced by the fashion powers-that-be, they’re fair game pretty much everywhere. (I mean, just saw an Insta pic of a very cool woman wearing high-top Vans to a wedding. Not all heroes wear heels.) But there are still a few places where trainers aren’t welcome, like offices with a more straight-laced dress code.

Leave it to Allbirds to solve that problem. Today, the cult-fave brand is launching a new style called the Tree Breezer ($95), which is essentially the ballet-flat version of its much-loved sneakers. After years of hearing women ask for a more dressed-up version of their favorite kicks, Allbirds responded with its most office-appropriate style yet—one that blends a classic slip-on silhouette with the breathable materials and comfy insoles for which Allbirds is best known.

“The request for flats has been one of our most consistent pieces of feedback…[because] not everyone could wear our Runners or other styles every day,” says Allbirds’ chief marketing officer Julie Channing. “I love this quote from one of our customers named Laura from Ohio: ‘I get bummed when I have to go to work on Monday and put my Allbirds away again until the weekend.’ Our aim with the Tree Breezers is to offer customers a product that is appropriate for a wider variety of settings, while still providing the style and comfort they love.”

The Tree Breezer delivers on that goal. They’re made with the same mesh knit eucalyptus-tree fiber as the rest of the brand’s Tree collection, which keeps feet cool while being super sustainable. Odor-reducing, sweat-wicking merino wool insoles allow you to wear them sock-free (if you so choose). And they’re kitted out with Allbirds’ legendary sugarcane sole, which is so comfortable that one Well+Good staffer described the brand’s shoes as “performance slippers.” (See, sugar’s not so bad!)

As far as looks go, the Tree Breezer is dropping in three limited edition colors inspired by summer and the ocean—pink, gray, and turquoise—while a darker blue style will be available for the long haul. “We felt Marine Blue was a beautiful and wearable color for all times of the year, while still tying back to our seaside inspiration,” says Channing, who notes that more core and limited edition colors will be coming in future seasons. Oh, and this is the first Allbirds style that will come in half sizes (women’s 5-11), which is a very big deal if you’ve ever tried to commute in a pair of shoes that are just a liiiittle bit too big or small.

They’re simple enough that you can pretty much wear them with anything in your work wardrobe—from crisp and tailored looks (an oversized blazer and cropped pants, perhaps), to things that skew a little flashier (a puff-sleeved blouse in the shade of the season). Or, you know, maybe even a bridesmaid’s dress.

If you want to add some oomph to your sneaker wardrobe, try switching out the laces for a snazzier pair. It’s certainly a less controversial choice than the platform sneaker trend.
