Last summer it was all about blush-toned kicks, and come fall, everyone was stepping out in YSL’s high-tops and embellished lace-ups. But now that we’re in the coldest, grimmest part of winter, a new footwear trend is emerging—one that’s taking a cue from the oh-so-cozy hygge home craze.
Yes, the hottest (no pun intended) sneaker style right now is shearling lined. Whether filled with fleece or faux fur, these ultra-warm kicks are basically the lace-up equivalent of wearing your slippers out of the house. And from activewear power-players (Nike) to high-fashion houses (Prada), it seems like everyone’s in a comfy mood.
One caveat: The most covetable styles are made from elevated materials like suede and leather, which doesn’t play well with giant slush puddles. Luckily, waterproofing isn’t just reserved for your mascara—if you want to wear your shearling sneakers on not-so-sunny days, cleaning expert Jason Markk has a few prep tips. “First, make sure the shoes are clean and dry,” he says. “Dust off any top-layer dust or dirt with a soft bristle brush. Next, apply a premium water and stain repellant to the entire upper area of the shoes. You want to make sure you have good overall coverage, but do not oversaturate. Allow the shoes to fully dry, and you’re good to go!”
Style them with a chic pair of work trousers or your favorite new leggings, and these kicks will be your go-tos until the final drop of snow melts. Call them fashion’s answer to the bulky (and decidedly unfabulous) snow boot.
