Those born in Libra (September 22 to October 23) are the zodiac’s socialites. They tend to see the beauty in the world and have an affinity for the finer things in life. That’s par for the course as they’re ruled by Venus, aka the planet of beauty and romance. Among Libra traits are being fair, relationship-oriented, and intellectual. One could easily fall in love with Libra’s effervescent charm, but who is Libra compatible with—and who is merely under their flirtatious spell?

Justice-seeking Libra carefully studies two sides of a situation in an effort to facilitate balance and peace. It makes sense that Libra is symbolized by the scales, and because of their ability to compromise they're good at keeping a fabulous group of friends, and usually adopt the group's mediator duties. That said, Libras are most likely to thrive with a partner who can provide them with a sense of equilibrium while keeping up with their busy calendars.

When it comes to compatible matches for Libra, “Libra's non-negotiables in love are beauty, harmony, and a true mental connection,” astrologer Narayana Montúfar explains. The air sign cares deeply about their image, which means they’re attracted to those who don’t just share their interests, but their aesthetics too.

“When it comes to compatibility, Libra's non-negotiables in love are beauty, harmony, and a true mental connection.”—Narayana Montúfar, astrologer

That’s because, as Montúfar notes, Venus, aka the planet of romance (and corresponding Greek goddess of pleasure and beauty), rules Libra, meaning “This is one of the zodiac signs that seeks not only outer but inner beauty.” Below, astrologers break down Libra compatibility, including the best and worst matches for the air sign.

Key Libra Traits

Not only is Libra associated with the seventh house of partnership and diplomacy, but they’re also ruled by the romantic planet Venus, so predictably relationships are paramount to the sign of the scales. Because of these complementary energies, balance is everything to Libra, and they aim to meet in the middle and try to view situations objectively and assess things from multiple points of view. Tactful, pleasing, and even-keel, they’re often easy to get along with and are strong collaborators.

The influence Venus has on Libra’s personality is also clear. For one, Libra has the reputation of being preoccupied with appearances, and while this can often manifest as a shallow obsession, it can also represent their aspiration to find beauty in everything and mirror it to others. Libras are also thought to be true romantics, which makes all the more sense considering that they are associated with partnership. Indeed, relationships are important to Libras, but it’s just as essential for the sign to find independence outside of their relationships to achieve true balance.

“Libras are charming, clever, [and] genuine.”—Emily Newman

Plus, they’re a cardinal sign, meaning Libra is a self-starter who likes to initiate connections and is easy to get along with. There’s no question why: “Libras are charming, clever, [and] genuine,” says Emily Newman, psychic reader, spiritual healer, counselor, and astrologer at The Best of Psychic Reader.

On the other hand, Libra’s tendency to accommodate others can just as easily be their weakness. Their people-pleasing is prone to being self-sacrificial; to keep the peace, they may find themselves ignoring their own needs. That said, they are also not one to shy away from speaking out in the name of fairness and justice—so they’ll defend the people they love.

Which zodiac signs are most compatible with Libra?

Libra is attracted to other air signs like Gemini because of how effortless the connection feels. The pair share a penchant for communication and deep talks, which is why Montúfar says this match is one of the most compatible for Libra. “They are both social, fun, and expressive and will stay up-to-date with the latest trends when it comes to music and culture,” Montúfar says. Gemini will remain inspired by Libra’s eye for beauty, and Libra will never be bored with Gemini’s mile-a-minute mind.

Another air sign, Aquarius is all about progress and humanitarianism. Both are highly intellectual and may enjoy each other’s banter and creative ideas, and Montúfar says they’ll stay up to date about fascinating subjects. “However, the relationship will only last if Libra understands that Aquarius—at its core—is a sign that needs freedom. For this reason, Libra and Aquarius are most likely better at being friends than lovers,” Montúfar says—but if they can meet in the middle in terms of alone time, they can create something meaningful together.

Leo is a fire sign, and their lively energy generally fares well with Libra’s social personality. In Montúfar’s words: “Libra and Leo can be a really good combination, forming a power couple!” The pair is typically popular in their friendship circle, says Montúfar, “attracting the eyes of so many people around them. Since air (Libra) feeds fire (Leo), Leo can truly benefit from Libra's sense of aesthetics, and in return, Libra benefits from the immense vitality and confidence that only Leo can provide.”

Which zodiac signs are least compatible with Libra?

Note that even if you’re not considered astrologically compatible with someone, it doesn’t mean the relationship is destined for failure. And just because you are compatible doesn’t necessarily mean things are meant to be. While your sun sign can tell you about your personality traits and quirks, it’s not the only thing that matters when discerning astrological compatibility.

That said, there’s something to be said about how well you’ll get along with someone’s certain personality traits. In terms of the worst matches for Libra, Montúfar breaks down the zodiac signs that aren’t likely to last with Libra’s bubbly personality.

Aries is the sister sign of Libra, aka they sit opposite of each other on the zodiac wheel. “This is an opposites attract kind of relationship, which can work if both embrace healthy competition,” says Montúfar. Sister signs have the potential to balance one another out, but because of they express themselves differently (Aries is impulsive while Libra takes their time in decision making), “It can be either great or a total nightmare,” Montúfar says.

Generally, a water sign like Cancer is low compatibility for Libra because of the differences in their emotional needs in a relationship. Libra operates logically while Cancer goes off by their feelings. “The truth is that Libra's least favorite thing is to dive deep into emotional territory, which is Cancer's specialty,” Montúfar says, adding that “Cancer might also be too controlling for Libra's taste.” Ultimately, a Libra-Cancer couple is prone to stifling each other if they fail to be patient with the other’s needs.

While the cardinal signs can relate to their go-getter mentality, Capricorn tends to be too serious for Libra, according to Montúfar. Libra leans more toward outgoing and exuberant, whereas Capricorn takes on a professional vibe in order to leave good impressions. “Libra loves to have a big social circle and Capricorn prefers having less but deeper friendships, for example,” says Montúfar. As a result, both signs could feel inauthentic in order to please the other.

How does Libra compatibility vary with different signs?

Libra and Aries Compatibility

Fiery Aries is opposite from Libra on the zodiac wheel. Although they are opposite zodiac signs, they can make a complementary pair. In general, air and fire signs work well together, Juliana McCarthy, astrologer and author of The Stars Within You, told Well+Good. And with Venus, (planet of love), ruling Libra, and Mars (planet of sex, passion, and desire), ruling Aries, sparks are bound to fly between the two signs.

Libra and Aries are also cardinal signs, meaning they’ll have no trouble getting things going. While they differ in personality—Libra is diplomatic and open-minded, and Aries is straightforward and, at times, brash—they can learn from each other. “With an Aries, Libra needs to assert themselves and learn from their partner how to prioritize their needs and desires,” Lang told Well+Good. “With a Libra, Aries needs to show adoration.”

Libra and Taurus Compatibility

Taurus is quincunx, or five signs apart, from Libra, and according to astrologer Tenae Stewart, author of The Modern Witch’s Guide to Magickal Self-Care, they have one important aspect in common. “Both Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus, planet of love. They both highly value their relationships and having connections with other people is important to them,” she says. “However, they have nothing else in common.”

For one, “Libra is a cardinal sign and Taurus is a fixed sign,” says Stewart. Fixed Earth sign Taurus can make quick, firm decisions, while Libra can initiate but will take some time to come up with a resolution, which can be frustrating for the bull. Taurus is also stubborn and immovable, and Libra might bend over backward to keep the peace, which can lead to an imbalance in their partnership and resentment in the long run.

Libra and Gemini Compatibility

The mutable air sign, Gemini, ruled by Mercury, is all about communication and socialization. As a fellow air sign, Libra can innately relate to Gemini’s needs and desires in a relationship. Both are incredibly communicative signs that look to stimulate their minds and both are always up for new experiences, so there’s plenty of common ground between them.

They are also trine, or four signs apart, from each other, which usually indicates a harmonious and easygoing connection. However, Newman mentions: “Gemini has a wavering mind.” This all-over-the-place way of thinking can be at times intolerable for Libra, but the sign of scales is generally patient—and with clear communication and understanding, the two can overcome challenges and create a long-lasting partnership.

Libra and Cancer Compatibility

Cancer, the emotional, intuitive cardinal water sign, and Libra have two opposing personalities. Cancer is the homebody of the zodiac, while Libra are social butterflies. While both value relationships, Libra might not be able to give Cancer the emotional security they need, while Libra may feel suffocated by the relationship. Cancer and Libra also form a square to each other, which generally indicates challenges between the two signs.

One of the greatest challenges Cancer and Libra might face is the differences in their emotional expression. Cancer’s emotions can fluctuate quickly, which can throw Libra off balance. “Cancer is too sensitive [for Libra], says Newman, “and sometimes [Cancer is] too anxious and judgmental for Libra’s taste.” On the upside, they will both give their relationship a fighting chance, so they may come to understand each other in the long run.

Libra and Leo Compatibility

Fixed fire sign Leo, symbolized by the regal and authoritative celestial lion, makes an ideal partner for Libra, who is content to let Leo take the spotlight—and even encourage their partner to shine. No doubt, sparks will fly when they meet, since Leo is all about show and attention, which will appeal to Libra, who appreciates the theatrics.

Newman also notes that Leo and Libra will be drawn to qualities that are inherent in the other. Leo, for instance, will appreciate Libra’s “fairness and confidence,” while Libra will be intrigued by Leo’s “elegance and grace.” The fiery lion might also come to love Libra’s harmonious nature and their ability to calm heated spirits. Overall, they are a good match with lots of potential.

Libra and Virgo Compatibility

Virgo and Libra are on the cusp of and next to each other on the zodiac calendar, and while on the surface, they may appear to have wildly different personalities, the signs can find common ground. For one, “both are intellectual,” says Stewart, and they can make for a particularly cerebral match. However, they may avoid communicating honestly when a conflict arises, which might lead to challenges in the long term.

Stewart also mentions that Virgo, though often labeled as reserved, is actually a “very sensual and sexual sign,” which could appeal to Venus-ruled Libra who is all about relationships and a romantic at heart. “When they connect on an intellectual and physical level, I think they will find that they can really support one another,” she says.

Libra and Libra Compatibility

Two Libras together can make the ultimate fairytale. They share similar values and beliefs, and they won’t shy away from love. A Libra-Libra couple will have a “very powerful, loving, heart-centered connection between them,” says Stewart, giving their relationship soulmate-level potential. As with any relationship though, it’s not without its fair share of challenges.

One of the greatest challenges two Libras might face as a couple is their indecisiveness. “They tend to have a hard time choosing between things because they see the beauty and value in all the different options, so they will struggle to make a decision,” says Stewart. “As long as they commit to making a decision, they can make it work as a couple.”

Libra and Scorpio Compatibility

Libra and Scorpio are on the cusp of and next to each other in the zodiac wheel. They both value commitment, but it can be challenging for Libra to set strict boundaries with their Scorpio partner, whereas Scorpio might unwittingly take advantage of Libra’s go-with-the-flow attitude. “Scorpios feel passionate and are prone to covert planning, with a need to gain the upper hand in situations,” says Newman, which won’t sit well with Libra.

Newman says Libras tend to be judgmental, but Scorpio can be manipulative. While cardinal air sign Libra has earned their reputation as peacemakers that value balance and harmony, they also don’t like to feel controlled or stifled in their relationship. If their relationship is left unchecked, there may be misunderstandings due to power struggles and exploitation between the two signs.

Libra and Sagittarius Compatibility

Fiery Sagittarius can be a great partner for airy Libra as they are social and they like to experience new things—and, in general, their respective astrological elements tend to complement one another beautifully. With much in common, including their lifestyles and hobbies, this fire and air combo has what it takes to create a long-lasting relationship.

“Plus, they’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders and enjoy seeing the other achieve great things,” says Newman. Libra will likely have to take the initiative in this partnership, as Sagittarius is an independent sign that values their alone time. All in all, they’ll make a compatible match if they achieve a balance between spending time together and apart.

Libra and Capricorn Compatibility

Cardinal earth sign Capricorn is square, or three signs apart, from Libra, indicating some tension between the two signs. Capricorn is the hard-working, ambitious, and, at times, domineering sea goat, who prefers taking the lead. On the other hand, Libra dislikes being told what to do, and they often like taking initiative in their partnerships—and for things to go exactly as they want.

So, while Libra prioritizes harmony in their relationships, they also like things to be as harmonious as they see fit. Plus, they like attention from their partner, and work-oriented Capricorn may not be able to satisfy the emotional needs required to sustain a Libra who wants to be heard and supported by their partner. As a result, the signs could face many challenges in the relationship if left unchecked.

Libra and Aquarius Compatibility

As two air signs, Aquarius and Libra will have an affinity for one another. “On an intuitive and intellectual level, they are a perfect combination,” says Newman. “Libra admires the out-of-the-box ideas of Aquarius and values freedom, which Aquarius loves in return.” As the zodiac’s humanitarian, Aquarius can also find commonality with Libra in their love of justice.

Aquarius may also appreciate Libra’s ability to make them feel loved and supported without any pretense, and since Libra is incredibly social and beloved among their peers, partnering with Libra can help fulfill Aquarius’ need for belonging. However, keep in mind: “Romantically, each will have to learn how to open up and share their personal feelings,” astrologer Maria Sofia Marmanides previously told Well+Good.

Libra and Pisces Compatibility

Mutable water sign Pisces is five signs apart from Libra, which means they form a quincunx angle. Astrologically speaking, this might mean that the signs may find it hard to understand one another. However, “Pisces and Libras love love,” Stewart told Well+Good. Plus, both are empathetic, so they’ll have an innate sense of what the other needs.

If anything, Pisces typically values emotional connection, whereas Libra puts a higher value on intellectual connection, says Stewart. Being on the same emotional page might be a point of frustration for Libra and Pisces, as Pisces can be emotional to a fault. For the relationship to work, Libra may have to help Pisces navigate their ever-changing emotions.
