As those who hit the gym often know, there are really three beauty routines of the day—morning, night, and post-workout, which is often somewhere in between. And that much primping isn’t always the way you want to be using your time.
It’s a sentiment shared by Gwyneth Paltrow, the major natural makeup and skin-care proponent (and overall wellness expert), who’s known for hitting an almost daily dance cardio workout. So when we got a chance to sit down with her last week, we had to ask: what’s your beauty secret for looking polished apres sweat sesh? And just how quick is this regimen?
It turns out that Paltrow’s primping routine is all easy (had to). “I don’t have a lot of time to stand there with the hair dryer,” she says candidly. “For me, it’s about how clean can I make my skin.”
So, after a shower at the gym—”I get so sweaty,” she says—she pulls out a few makeup essentials she created for Juice Beauty’s new Phyto-Pigments line, which contain “organic, high-performance ingredients.”
“One of the main reasons I got involved [in natural beauty] in the first place is having had a long career having to put on makeup all the time, I started to understand what’s in conventional makeup,” Paltrow says, and she noticed the “white space” to create something non-toxic, effective, and chic.

1. Work out with a clean face
A lot of people believe you break out if you sweat a lot. “I think that’s a myth,” says Paltrow. “Girls I know that have that problem [with breakouts] wear foundation when they work out.” That’s causing the issue. “I personally think you should just work out with clean skin. You’re sweating and detoxing…and just wash after.”
2. Put on some primer
After a workout, instead of applying anything too heavy, Paltrow loves Juice Beauty’s Illuminating Primer (not to be confused with a foundation). “This is the product I use the most,” she tells us. “It’s a little iridescent. Sometimes I wear it with nothing over it or with a little moisturizer, and it gives such a nice [glowing] finish.”
3. Add some color to your cheeks
Paltrow says natural-looking cream blushes, not powders, are what it’s all about. Have trouble using the creamier option? “You have to blend, girl!” Paltrow jokes. “I’m not a heavy makeup-in-the-day kind of girl, but I do like a little bit of color. Especially as you get older—you need a little help. So I’m very big into the cream blush.”
4. Coat your lashes
Paltrow is all about quick coat of mascara: “I think it’s hard when post-workout women are trying to do a full face of makeup in the gym mirror. I like to use light products.” Mascara defines your eyes, and you’re done.
5. Apply some lip gloss
“I’ll do a little lip gloss if I have a meeting,” says Paltrow. “But I think when you work out, you want to have a nice little kit that’s just good on clean skin.” And not much else.
