Yesterday, Chobani opened the doors of a chic boutique storefront on West Broadway and Prince Street in Soho, where Greek yogurt comes dressed up in a glass bowl filled with seasonal fruit, nuts, and more.
Chobani’s yogurt bar opens on the heels of Dannon’s The Yogurt Culture Company, which debuted earlier this month in Midtown East, and Stonyfield Organic’s Dairy Bar, which opened at Chelsea Piers this spring.
It’s like the froyo explosion is happening all over again—just without the fro.
And unlike the mass-produced, fast food vibe that Pinkberry and 16 Handles give off, thesesfresh yogurt bars are shooting for an upscale, high-end feel.
Staff members dress in crisp white shirts and aprons, greet you as you enter, and hand you a menu. When you’re ready, they take your order on a PalmPilot, and then hand you your made-to-order yogurt in a glass bowl (which you can return for 25 cents off your next purchase). It kind of feels like you’re shopping at C. Wonder…for yogurt.
Yogurt combos include a delish pistachio, dark chocolate, honey, orange, and mint leaves, and an equally scrumptious blueberry, chia, hemp seeds, walnuts, and agave ($3.75 for each). Two percent yogurt is the default served, but you can request skim.
All of the city’s yogurt bars are wooing healthy-leaning New Yorkers by putting the emphasis on protein and ingredient sourcing. Chobani says it only uses milk free of rBST from “New York-area farms.” The Yogurt Culture Company sources from just one family-owned Hudson Valley creamery, and Stonyfield showcases its organic certification.
It seems to be working. While dairy has fallen out of favor in lots of circles, it seems even the most health-conscious New Yorkers are reluctant to give up their Greek yogurt. —Lisa Elaine Held
