Joey Gonzalez, celebrity fitness trainer and owner of Barry’s Bootcamp NYC, is always on the go. In the past three weeks, he’s traveled across Europe to LA (with a pit stop in the Midwest) and back to the Flatiron studio, just in time to train with Kim and Kourtney Kardashian. This may explain why his fridge is, well, empty. What does he eat? He filled us in.
Okay, the obvious question first. What is Zone Manhattan? Zone Manhattan is a local meal delivery service. They customize three meals and two snacks for you each day based upon an initial consultation with one of their dieticians. It’s based on a 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbohydrates nutritional equation.
So, how’s it going for you as a meal plan so far? My managers, Sam and Alycia, are also participating, and we’ve seen dramatic drops in weight (5-8 lbs) within the first week, which may be due in part to the fact that we’re ingesting low amounts of sodium. I would say the most dramatic changes have been in the face and abdominals.
One disadvantage for me is that 2,300 calories a day is the maximum they can supply. I’ve been forced to supplement with protein shakes to make up for the difference. I burn about 1,000 calories per class at Barry’s Bootcamp and was not looking to lose any muscle mass.
What do you eat when you’re literally on the go? I always carry protein bars and packs of protein powder in my bag or suitcase. At home, I’ll snack on Greek yogurt, vegetables, and any lean source of protein. And right now I take the Zone meals with me wherever I go.
And when you’re not tweaking your diet with the Zone, what do you eat when you’re at work? Normally, I order protein shakes from our FUEL BAR after class (I add Creatine and L Glutamine) and eat our custom designed meals and snacks. We have turkey meatballs, egg white breakfast burritos, Arizona brown rice chicken bowls and more…
Speaking of meatballs…what are those red things on the left? Plums!
Why is almond your milk of choice? I LOVE Almond milk, and it contains no cholesterol or lactose and can taste good with anything: cereal, protein powder, etc.
Your fridge is sparse, but how about your pantry? Is it equally barren? I have an entire drawer full of miracle noodles (Shirataki)—they’re naturally soluble with no fat, sugar, or starch. They literally contain contain zero net carbohydrates and zero calories, have no gluten, and are made of a healthy natural fiber called Glucomannan. My favorite meal in the world is a bowl of miracle noodles with grilled chicken marinated in mustard, vinegar, and garlic powder. I also have an entire cabinet filled with protein powder and other supplements. —Monica Rozenfeld
